Reaching children in need…
A grade one student, Soleng, cared for by her grandmother who goes to work leaving her with 10 other children and no adult support. After Soleng was absent from school, Bridge of Hope (BOH) community care team visited her at home to find she had an ulcerated ankle needing urgent medical attention. After treatment with IV antibiotics and regular dressings the ulcer healed well…the outcome would have been very different if the community care team had not intervened.
Highlights…
- BOH were pleased with the academic results in 2023…all 13 students from grade 3 graduated to grade 4 in the local school, only 1 student out of 24 in grade 2 is repeating, while 10 of 35 students in grade 1 are repeating. The children improve the more time spent in school.
- The children in the Badminton team are showing improved academic results with 4 team members in the top 5 academic achievers.
- Two players from the BOH badminton team participated in an international competition in Phnom Penh finishing 3rd and 4th. Such a wonderful achievement for these children from such a poor community…highlighting the work of BOH to all at the competition.
Families and Children Benefiting…
The current student numbers have increased from 2023 by 43 students to 135 in 2024. Another 110 families are being served in the community. The rice sponsorship program, providing for 30 families once a month when funds are available.
The BOH-annexed Dream School runs from Monday to Friday as morning and afternoon classes for different students.
Ongoing challenges
- Staffing is always a challenge especially when key staff leave or retire. The project manager, Jun Kim, is delegating more decision making to the Cambodian leadership as part of succession planning.
- Despite highly encouraging outcomes seen in the lives of children and staff, the continuous financial shortage hinders what can be achieved in the future and the numbers of people they can serve.
