Readers to Leaders…
Container loads of books for children continue to be sent through Library Aid International Inc. (LAI) to developing countries to encourage ‘readers to become leaders’ in their own communities and countries. Eight containers have now been sent to various African communities with the ninth currently being filled.
The seventh container benefited schools in Zimbabwe including Watershed Primary School in Ladysmith, Zimbabwe who received an All-in-one Computer. The head teacher stated “…this donation will go a long way in the teaching and learning of ICT as the school had no computer before.”
The eighth container of books was sent to Cape Town, South Africa in early November 2021 and is being distribution by the Rotary Club of Newlands and other organisations. The Head Teacher from Ndimimbili Primary School wrote “…Your assistance will go a long way. It’s impact I know would be felt and noted in near future. We promise as a school to use the books wisely and keep them safe for generations to come. Last but not least, consider us in any other assistance that may arise.”
A newly purchased ninth container is already 34 percent filled with sorted and boxed books and educational resources. With the help and enthusiasm of some new and existing volunteers including two Centrelink ‘New Start” work placements, this container will be ready as soon as enough books are available.
Fundraising initiatives…
A sale of books not able to be sent overseas, was fruitful in raising much needed funds. Another fundraising initiative…donated books about Tasmania are on Facebook for people to make offers for purchase.
