Dynamics changing…
The dynamics at St Tabitha Children’s Home in Fiji is changing…more children reaching adolescence, increase in food, clothing and staffing costs, and staff turnover. As appointed Principal of St Tabitha Children’s Home, Dr Eleni Athinodorou, is overseeing changes to improve the outcomes for the children…emotionally and physically.
Dr Eleni states they aim to employ and train more local staff to provide Fijian role models for the older children as they navigate adolescence and self-identity. To meet the Ministry of Social Welfare standards, they continue to review their Quality Standards. Once stable in this area, their focus will turn to future building project.
Staffing changes…
- Local Fijian Matron appointed for the home,
- Increased staffing ratios…another carer employed enabling a carer for both the younger and older groups of children,
- New cook and a part-time cook assistant employed to ensure nutrition, hygiene and kitchen management standards are maintained.
Impact of changes…
Positive impacts include consistent routines and structure in the Home; improved staff morale and willingness to learn new skills; reduced challenging behaviours; children are happy with the changes and cooperative; and improved communication all round.
Other achievements…
- Training and development in Child Protection, First Aid and Behaviour Guidance.
- Individual Education Plans for all the children in the Home are in place.
- Volunteers continue to come and help under the invitation of Paradise 4 kids.
