Staff need Homes
This project for the Maxton Strong School involves the construction of a double story housing unit containing 6 homes: two 4-bedroom units and four 2-bedroom units. This additional accommodation is an essential component for the continued expansion of our school & orphanage.
We are blessed to have partnered with S.Group for both the design and fundraising side of the project. With their help, we have already raised over $220,000.00 in donations and pledges.
Why this project?
Most of our staff grew up on our orphanage, either as its first teen-aged volunteers back in the 1950s or as orphan children themselves. In all cases, this dedicated group has spent their entire lives in service to our children, in service to God. The fact that we will soon be able to offer them homes befitting this kind of sacrifice is an answered prayer that will have a huge impact on our organization for generations to come.
It is difficult to describe all that this new building will represent. While new school rooms and new hostel buildings have risen up around our compound (projects that are relatively easy to fund-raise for), our staff have simply continued their work, without complaint, without expectation, living in conditions far below what they deserve. But now as we are finally able to honour them in this way, as we give respect to those who have given so much to our children over the years, we will be creating more passion, more energy for the work being done here.
Construction is already underway; we kicked things off just before the monsoon began. The footings and some of the columns have already been erected and once the floods go down we will continue the work.
It is expected that construction could take as much as 10 months to complete. The July monsoon will significantly slow down what can be done. We would like to have completed construction by mid-2018. It would then take a further 2 months to paint, install electricals, furnish the building and landscape the area ready for occupation.
Who gets the benefit?
The new accommodation will not only be a long-overdue gift for our current volunteer staff and their families, but it will also allow us to add additional staff members either at our school or orphanage as the needs arise. Quality housing will help us attract the quality people that will be needed in the years ahead as we continue to expand, moving towards our goal of complete self-sustainability. Local builders and construction crew also will receive full-time work until the project is completed.
