Community recovering…
Majority of the community are vaccinated allowing most lockdown restrictions to be lifted and normal activities and travel to resume. ACN is still providing some emergency food relief to those in need and some basic supplies to health centres.
Many people affected by the local disasters are being assisted to recover a livelihood by the provision of seeds and fertilizer with associated training.
Reconstruction of houses destroyed in earlier landslides/floods is also progressing well.
Health awareness increasing…
Health and hygiene promotion via radio, helpline, and face to face, continues to be well received. Topics include Covid-19, personal hygiene, healthy living, clean lifestyle, uterine prolapses, safe motherhood, nutrition in pregnancy and breast feeding, birth planning, alcohol/drug awareness and cleanliness of the community environment.
Women’s awareness increased and attitudes changed after participating in healthy and clean lifestyle sessions followed by self-help groups and practical sessions. Caring for their community environment was included to reduce pestilence and disease…this had never been considered their responsibility.
In south Nepal, ACN staff together with community leaders exemplified this by cleaning the neighbourhood while encouraging community members to join them. The community have placed old sacks at strategic locations by the roadside in the community for rubbish collection. The ACN team and community leaders will monitor this.
Health promotion talent competitions for children and teenagers have created a lot of excitement, increased awareness, and some creative entries! Several schools have also requested several health, hygiene, and alcohol/drug awareness classes.
Female adult literacy classes have restarted leading to a greater understanding of health awareness and employment.
Plans for a new health promotion and livelihood project in Sarawal village continue with particular focus on vulnerable women and children.
