Devastating third wave of COVID-19
In June, Bangladesh was severely affected by a third wave of Covid-19, twice as bad as earlier waves. The delta strain forced the nation into lockdown again. The vast majority of workers are on casual wages, so incomes dried up leaving the families unable to afford to buy food.
Support for hundreds of families
The New Hope Trust has been able to provide food for hundreds of Bangladeshi families over the past year and will continue for the foreseeable future. In poor rural areas they have been providing food parcels of rice, flour, oil, lentils, salt, onions, potatoes and soup. In urban areas they have been distributing packaged cooked meals for families. The food aid program will continue through September at least.
Education continues
Good news…the government announced that they may reopen on the 12 September. All schools in Bangladesh have been closed since 17 March 2020. The New Hope Trust continues to fully support all the staff of our schools as their wider families are dependent on their salaries. All at the orphanage have kept well through COVID-19 and the boys have been doing their lessons at home and all have passed the government standard required to enable them to progress to the next grade.
Over 900 students and 20 teachers plus 40 are participating in Adult literacy programs. 12 Boys are currently at the orphanage plus the house parents and their 2 children.
Enjoying new accommodation
The boys are now well settled into their new accommodation with more space, modern facilities and access to more youth and pastoral care programs.
THANK YOU…
Many generous donations have been received in the last quarter. We sincerely thank all who have generously donated to this project and enabled continued provision of food and supplies for hundreds of families in Bangladesh as well as support for the orphanage. The orphanage have been able to purchase a keyboard, guitar and drumkit and all are receiving music lessons with fund raised.
