Local doctors fill the gaps...
Local doctors trained by Prof Hannah Krause AO, Prof Judith Goh AO and team are now performing fistula and prolapse repairs independently of this project…transforming many women’s lives, filling the gaps between visits by the team and successors of this amazing project.
Uganda
In August, the team operated on 124 women at Kagando (94 women) and Kitovu (30 women) hospitals, women with fistulas and prolapse. The team consisted of Prof Krause, Prof Goh, Dr Jackie Smalldridge (NZ) Dr Louise Tomlinson (NZ) Dr Sum Sum Lo (NZ), Dr Kazila Bhutia (Singapore), Dr Hnin Yee Kyaw (registrar Aust). Dr Jackie, who has assisted at Kagando since 2015 is retiring and will be missed.
Dr Baluku, staff O&G specialist at Kagando, was at the camp when not busy with emergency cases. A Ugandan O&G trainee attended, and Dr Muhindo (Ugandan working in DR Congo) returned to upskill during the camp.
South Sudan
In October at Wau, they saw 64 women and operated on 54 women, mainly fistulas repaired. Some women rowed across flooded rivers to get to the camp due to significant flooding from dam releases in nearby Lake Victoria (Uganda).
Prof Krause and Prof Goh returned to Wau to assist and upskill Dr Marianna (O&G working at Comboni Hospital, Wau). Dr Tom Carins (O&G, Bendigo) attended his first camp in Africa and wants to return. A Continence Nurse from Melbourne came to Wau to upskill the local nursing staff.
They plan to return to South Sudan at the end of January 2025.
Dr Denis Mucunguzi (Uganda) started his second year of urology training at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College. He is incredibly grateful for donations received from HADA to support his family and studies. He requires ongoing funding to meet his family needs and focus better on Urology training.
Urologists, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists are vital in continuing this life changing work.
