Flooding and landslide update…
At the end of September and early October, Nepal experienced extremely heavy rainfall that caused widespread damage across the country through overflowing rivers, flooding and landslides. Over 200 people died in the floods and many more injured, homes were damaged and destroyed, livelihoods and possessions lost.
In Rautahat District, continuous rain since October 10 has exacerbated the flood situation, displacing 5,595 people with 1,245 houses inundated and four homes destroyed. Tragically a further three lives have been lost: two drowned and one electrocuted. Critical infrastructure damage includes seven blocked roads, leaving many communities isolated. The local government has formally requested further support from ACN for the most severely affected households in Rajdevi Municipality, Rautahat.
Disaster Response…
ACN focused their disaster response on the plains of south Nepal, which were badly affected, and where staff already have good working relationships with local government and community leaders, and local communities through their health promotion and community development activities.
In response to immediate needs, ACN liaised with government and community leaders to assess the situation and distribute emergency relief to families affected by the floods. This included food packages, hygiene kits, blankets, and tarpaulins to 160 families in Nawalparasi and 250 families in Rautahat. Additionally, specialized new mother packages were provided to 150 mothers in Rautahat and 70 in Nawalparasi to support the unique needs of this vulnerable group.
Through the second phase of disaster response, ACN aims to provide emergency relief packages including food, shelter materials, and hygiene supplies to the most vulnerable families impacted by flooding in Rajdevi Municipality of Rautahat District. Depending on resources, the aim is to provide one month’s supply of food and hygiene package to 300 households, tarpaulin, P Foam mattress and blankets to 300 households, and later, to conduct Disaster Risk Reduction Preparedness Training workshops to 50 key community leaders.
Immediate needs in these areas include:
- Food Security: Food relief is urgently required to alleviate rising food insecurity.
- Shelter: Displaced families need temporary shelter supplies, such as tarpaulins, to secure basic protection.
- Health and Safety: Clean water and sanitation facilities are crucial to prevent waterborne diseases, alongside medical care for flood-related injuries.
