Covid-19
Despite all schools being closed in Bangladesh since 17 March 2020, we have managed to continue supporting our teachers. They and their extended families depend on their income for food. Unfortunately, Bangladesh had gone into the second wave of COVID-19 when daily ‘reported’ cases rose from 1,200 to 2,500. Even though the level has since come back to around 1,000 there is still no gazetted date for schools to reopen.
Action Stations
Hundreds of families who lost their jobs in rural and urban areas due to COVID-19 have been given emergency food parcels. Despite their local government area having high rates of COVID-19, the children in the orphanage are all safe and well. Even though their school has been closed since March 17, they have been given work to do at home until classes resume, hopefully in October.
In mid-January, we moved the boys from the rural area of Vadun to a larger, brand-new, rent-free facility in the Tongi area, just 25 minutes from Pastor Kalyan’s church. So the boys are enjoying better facilities but also have easier access to pastoral care programs.
We seek to:
- continue providing food relief for the communities we serve;
- continue supporting teachers during school closures;
- follow up the groups where we promoted our project;
- continue informing all supporters about the COVID-19 situation in Bangladesh; and
- resume normal school operations when the government authorizes opening again and when we feel it is safe to do so.
You Have Helped and Can Help
Our sincere thanks to the Australian supporters’ response to the crisis, which is an enormous blessing as we face meeting the massive needs of the communities with huge unemployment due to the initial closing of all industry and loss of crops through the flood. Over 900 students and 20 teachers plus 40 people participating in adult literacy programmes, 12 boys at the orphanage plus the house parents and their 2 children and hundreds of families that are the recipients of the current food aid have been blessed through your assistance to us.
