Syria is Groaning
Horrifying conditions there are causing an explosion of refugees to neighbouring countries, the number having passed 2 million. The majority of displaced Syrians have crossed into Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey, with close to 1.2 million of those in Lebanon alone – though aid agencies concede the number could be much higher owing to unregistered refugees who have settled in makeshift communities. Since the start of the war in Syria in early 2011, the number of people fleeing the country has swelled to more than 3 million – half of them children. And there is no end in sight for the brutal war which has claimed some 190,000 lives.
Situation in 2020
Presently, violence in north-west Syria since December has lead to the displacement of 900,000 people, according to UN reports. The crisis has reached a “horrifying new level” as traumatized people, mostly women and children, were forced to sleep outside in freezing temperatures due to the camps being full. Some babies died from the cold. Even worse than the horrific situation is the fact that some camps are being hit by ground-based strikes leading to wounding and death. Is seems as though for the Syrians, no shelter is now safe and they have nowhere to go.
