Container of goods arrives…
Their annual container arrived from Brisbane, courtesy of Harmony Mine, just before Christmas with supplies, clothes and gifts. The children were given computer tablets this year which they love. There is no internet services available so they will be downloading lessons onto them.
Maintenance never ends…
Regular maintenance is ongoing and keeping them busy. Much needed renovations of the toilet and laundry block are at the stage of floor tiling and putting in a septic tank. An extension onto the kitchen for a walk-in pantry will be the next task. With so many energetic children living in two houses it certainly takes its toll on paintwork and couches…new covers and repainting stairs and railings will commence soon.
Sadly, their much loved handyman/electrician succumbed to Covid-19 in October. He is greatly missed.
Great results…
The children have mostly achieved well in their exams, particularly our two eldest boys who were Dux of their classes.
Children benefiting…
Haus Pikinini is at full capacity with 21 children, down from 28 five years ago, and they support children who had been with them for shorter periods who returned to their families. The children’s welfare is supervised, their immediate needs met, school fees paid, and they are provided with stationery and clothing from the donations that come in the container from Brisbane.
The children who have returned to their families in the past have not continued at school. This is sad, not only because they are not receiving education and opportunities, but their school fees were already paid by the manager.
Children protected…
Security guards are employed both day and night. Fortunately, we have had no problems at Haus Pikinini except several attempts to break into the bike shed…despite break ins at the managers residence and a high-powered shot gun and cartridge found in the garden.
Your kidding!…
Much excitement among the children in anticipation of goats soon to be delivered as a gift from our MP. They will sleep in a newly built area attached to their chicken shed.
