Tragic accident…
Sadly, their MP, Hon Sam Basil, was killed in a tragic accident in May 2022. Our deepest sympathy to the manager, her family and all those deeply affected. Before his death he had donated K30,000 and promised a much needed new vehicle after the election. Life is very unpredictable in PNG and can turn in a heartbeat…leaving uncertainty as to how supportive the new MP will be.
Children settled…
Currently there are 19 children living at Haus Pikinini plus the 6 belonging to our workers and another 13 who have returned to their families. Now the children are older and well-settled into school it is much easier and with five less children it is less crowded. The orphanage supervises their welfare, attends to their immediate needs, pays for their school fees, and provides stationery and clothing from donations that come in our container from Brisbane.
Challenges ahead…
Constant blackouts are a real challenge. A generator for the two buildings used by Haus Pikinini is being considered to overcome this at a cost around K20,000 purchased and installed.
The rising cost of food and supplies is currently being counterbalanced by the reduced numbers of children meaning they are at full capacity.
Like all children, I.T. can become an obsession and they are monitoring this monitoring and restricting its usage to educational purposes on weekdays.
Good news story…
Much excitement at Haus Pikinini when the mother goat gave birth to her first baby…fortunately she was a she-goat as otherwise there would have been too many Billy goats!
