Aptly named Joy…
Joy Centre for Education Wasswa is an amazing place, educating amazing kids who will make a difference in their world. It is a primary school in a rural village in Uganda. It was started in 2011 with 25 students and 3 staff, and in 2026 has 345 students and 19 staff.
A team from Australia including Damien and Simone, the project managers, recently revisited the school, spending time with old boys & old girls of Joy School Wasswa…past students who completed primary education at the school and are now in secondary school. Three of the past students have just commenced at University in Uganda – all under scholarship from individual sponsors in Australia. The group enjoyed hearing the students dreams for the future and to encourage them to continue their education. They were able to attend the Mega Sports Day commencing with a march through the surrounding villages, then games, sports and speeches, and concluding with a meal for all those attending – around 600 people. Unfortunately, the Australian team were unsuccessful in their fight to win the balloon game, losing to a team of school parents!
The team visited local homes, building relationships with school families, though sometimes challenging when faced with the difficult circumstances that some people find themselves in. They are always welcoming and appreciative of the time spent with them and the gifts we bring.
Clean Up Wasswa Day…
Staff and students walk through the village collecting rubbish (which there is a lot of) and then set fires on the side of the road to burn the rubbish. It is a smoky experience, but the community is appreciative, and the students enjoy a break from studies to participate.
Challenges…
- For the past 4 years, they have been in the process of buying the land the school sits on…the money is paid but getting the Certificate of Title has been a very long, drawn-out process.
- To raise enough money to commence the Poultry Farm Project in 2027.
