Milestone Achieved…
With great excitement, the fully refurbished Emergency Response Vehicle arrived in the first week of July! What began as a basic box on wheels—previously suitable only for transporting bodies—is now a fully equipped emergency response vehicle. Within hours of its arrival, the vehicle was already in action, transporting a critically ill patient to the Regional Referral Hospital.
The presence of a fully equipped emergency vehicle has generated strong community interest and support from health facilities, local businesses, and residents. The ambulance’s visibility at large public events—often attended by more than 500 people—has further highlighted its importance while promoting GlenZ Dignity Hospital as a centre of excellence for community health response.
Building Networks…
They have established strong connections with a network of Ambulance Drivers across the Eastern Region of Uganda, ensuring improved coordination and rapid emergency response for towns and hospitals.
The first vehicle is now fully operational and plans for a second vehicle are underway. They are comparing the cost of refurbishing an existing vehicle with purchasing a four-wheel drive Landcruiser better suited to the local terrain. The recent withdrawal of USAID funding across Africa, including Uganda, has led to organisations selling vehicles and equipment—offering potential opportunities for affordable acquisitions.
Empowering Through Training…
The next major focus is on paramedic training in collaboration with GlenZ Dignity School of Health Sciences. Currently, doctors and nurses from the hospital accompany the ambulance during operations, but developing a team of qualified paramedics remains the top priority.
On the Road Ahead…
They are currently engaging a full-time, dedicated ambulance driver, who will work closely with the established regional network to ensure consistent service delivery.
Community engagement continues to grow with every callout and event, reinforcing the importance of this initiative in saving lives and strengthening local health infrastructure.
