Hope rekindled…
Day hikes, overnight hikes, swimming, and camps are available for both primary and high school students summer vacation to rekindle hope, motivation, discipline and commitment. COVID-19 lockdown restrictions wrought devastation on the social and academic development of the youth. In the poorer communities without adequate parental support, they relapsed into destructive behaviours…drug use, truancy, sexual promiscuity, and others.
This year posed the enormous challenge of taking back lost ground with some successes. One of the mothers shared the news that her son and grandson have made a clean break with marijuana.
Interventions working…
The manager intervened with a group of ten boys facing permanent suspension or expulsion from school…providing extra support academically and in all aspects of life. Some of these boys have learnt to read for the first time. Seven of the 10 boys are now back on track…the other three were regrettably suspended.
Several programmes continue… ‘The World needs a Father’ at the Toevlug Drug Rehabilitation Centre near Avian Par for the adults and a weekly programme for the youth. Toevlug is one of the few registered Rehabilitation Centers in South Africa that offers a programme for minors (children aged 10 to 18) with a nationwide intake.
