Landslide without warning…
A sudden landslide around 6pm one evening left 40 families homeless but still alive. Many houses were destroyed and others damaged. Some oxen and buffalo were rescued out of the rubble, but other livestock and crops were sadly destroyed. ACN responded quickly, taking initial emergency food and other essential supplies. Reconstruction of the houses is progressing well, with some completed before monsoon rains began. The local Government has requested ACN assist with the ongoing relief work…negotiations are underway for funding for this work.
Clean water available…
Installation of an arsenic free water tube by ACN together with the local community has ensured safe clean water for 35 households…community provided labour and local materials, and ACN provided technical expertise, oversight, and materials not available locally.
Health promotion activities…
The new health promotion, empowerment, and livelihood project in Sarawal village has a particular focus on vulnerable women and children. Community visits and meetings with local leaders and groups identified the most pressing health issues and other issues in the community. 124 participants attended four health awareness sessions. The HADA Advisor will hold more sessions on identified health issues to staff or groups as requested during next quarters visit.
ACN member elected to local government…
Meetings with the newly elected government officials have been positive. A member of ACN facilitated self-help group was elected to the local government team.
Empowering youth…
Community empowerment, income generation, and health promotion (CELIHP) project in Sarawal, south Nepal has commenced. Internships for young people in finance, management, technical areas were trialled and completed.
