Nepal Flood Disaster: HADA Responds to a Growing Humanitarian Crisis
A catastrophic flash flood has devastated communities in northern Nepal, leaving hundreds dead, hundreds more injured, and hundreds of families still waiting for news of missing loved ones.
The scale of the disaster is becoming clearer as search and rescue operations continue. At least 903 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, while 4,247 remain missing, according to the latest reports. The death toll is still rising as rescuers reach affected areas and continue searching for those missing.
The disaster has caused widespread destruction across the affected region. Powerful floodwaters, mud and debris have swept through communities, destroying homes and other buildings and severely damaging essential infrastructure. Hydropower facilities, telecommunications towers, roads and bridges have been washed away or damaged, leaving some communities isolated and making it difficult for emergency teams and humanitarian organisations to reach those in need.
For families affected by the disaster, the immediate needs are immense. People who have lost homes, livelihoods and essential belongings urgently need emergency shelter, food, clean water, basic household supplies and other humanitarian assistance.
HADA’s Response
In response to this unfolding crisis, HADA plans to support ACN, a trusted Nepali partner organisation with an established local presence and years of experience in disaster response. ACN is well positioned to understand the needs of affected communities and deliver assistance where it is most urgently required.
Working through an experienced local partner means that assistance can be guided by local knowledge, coordinated with authorities, and delivered as efficiently as possible. It also enables support to reach communities that may be difficult for external organisations to access.
HADA’s Project Manager will work with ACN to identify the most urgent needs and direct donated funds towards practical humanitarian assistance for people affected by the disaster.
ACN has already been in contact with local government and disaster management authorities to begin initial assessments and coordinate the response. ACN is currently gathering emergency relief supplies, with the response planned in two phases:
- Immediate Relief…Providing flood-affected households with emergency shelter, water filters and a month’s supply of essential food and non-food relief items, helping families meet their most urgent needs during the initial emergency.
- Response and Recovery…Subject to funding, as communities move from immediate relief into recovery, we hope to focus particularly on livelihood support and rebuilding. The scale and scope of this longer-term work will depend on the needs identified on the ground and the funding available.
