Monsoon season in full swing…
India is deep into the monsoon season, making everyday tasks heavier. Across North India, the relentless and unpredictable rains are causing severe flooding. To protect their community, 8 members of the National Disaster Response Force were invited to the GSAM campus for a practical safety session covering fires, floods, and earthquake readiness for staff and students. However, even with the monsoon rains the work has not slowed.
Busy in the workshop…
Achievements include:
- Building 80 new school desks, tables and 9 cupboards for the classrooms,
- Replacing fences and gates,
- Building a new covered walkway linking the new kindergarten to the main school building–keeping children dry between classes!
- Upgrading seasonal grain workers’ housing with solid rooms, kitchen, electricity and a bathing area,
- Enhancing the admin office in the school with a new fresh and professional look,
- Upgrading the grain storage (“kulla”) – raised floors and upgrades are keeping the stored grain well above flood levels, and
- Installing cricket batting nets with webbing installed; pitch preparation is next.
Good news…
GSAM kids are doing well across the hostels and school. Four new Mission University students launched into degrees in Political Science, Psychology, Business Administration, and Hotel Management. Proudly, GSAM are supporting both their degrees as well as their living expenses.
Student J, a Mission University alumnus, completed his B.Com (International Finance) through MU and is now just two exams away from finishing an MBA in Business Analytics & Finance. He has begun a six-month probationary role with a Delhi firm working on route-to-market optimization (oil & gas sector) – transitioning him from education into skilled employment. He has been at the Mission since he was 5 years old after the death of his mother and the arrest of his father for her death.
Beneficiaries…
The project supports 45 hostel children, 12 staff children, around 600 school students (kids from the local community), 65 staff and 8 contractual laborers. In addition, 16 university students are supported through our Mission University project.
Upcoming changes…
GSAM are investigating the process to register the school under a new academic affiliation board, the Central Board of Secondary Education. While this process is lengthy and complex, it would be an amazing asset for the school.
