School still out…
All educational institutions have been shut since 17 March 2020 due to Covid-19. The delta strain third wave of COVID-19 peaked in July at more than twice the number of cases (100,000 a week) and deaths of the previous two waves. Good news…The reduction in reported daily new cases 100,000 a week in early August to 31,500 last week and schools may reopen on 12th September.
Pause in progress
This project will regain focus once the schools actually restart and the Tongi school is up and running. There has been a potential new site identified at Nalitabari in central Bangladesh.
School closures, increasing land prices in Bangladesh and the difficulty in identifying and procuring suitable sites have hampered progress and increased costs. The building of the new Tongi school facility has been a focus for donations. Once schools reopen, economic realities in Bangladesh in a post COVID-19 world will provide clearer direction.
Impact ongoing
The schools positively impact and change the lives of over 900 students and 20 teachers plus 40 participating in Adult literacy programs. Many have gained employment through the Adult Literacy program in Sherpur and the employment skills training in Hotopara.
