Homelessness on the increase…
With the increased hardship of housing and inflation, numbers attending has increased along with their needs. They are seeing more immigrant families attending in the evenings. The homeless and families in need are all served a hot home-cooked meal including a dessert and soup in winter. In addition, bread, fruit, drinks are available together with other donated goods such as clothes, shoes, toiletries, towels, blankets etc.
In Melbourne, the program continues every Tuesday evenings, with a minimum of 150 people.
In Brisbane they help the Homeless by supporting the Emmanuel City Mission & Hope Ministries both situated in and around the Brisbane CBD. ECM have now extended their services to opening all night and offering safe sleep spaces averaging 200 persons per night. 750 people are helped each week.
It is pleasing to see beneficiaries taking some ownership of the service and pitching in to help or give donations.
Challenges…
- More volunteers and helpers are needed. The Sydney service was closed due to lack of volunteers.
- Due to the increased need and numbers and increase of food ingredients, the cost is increasing and maintaining our budget is difficult.
