From HIV to Haus Pickinini…
Haus Pickinini orphanage creates a positive, loving home environment in which the abandoned and neglected children in WAU can develop physically, mentally, socially, and professionally… giving them a sense of worth. The scourge of HIV within the community has left many of them without family and nowhere to go.
These children are thriving in this environment…enjoying learning, camaraderie with other children and tending the goats. The orphanage supervises their welfare, attends to their immediate needs, pays for their school fees, and provides stationery and clothing from donations that come in our container from Brisbane.
Ongoing challenges
Constant blackouts are an issue. A generator for the two buildings used by Haus Pikinini would overcome this at a cost around K20,000 purchased and installed.
The rising cost of food and supplies is counterbalanced by the reduced numbers of children meaning they are at full capacity.
The internet and online games can become an obsession with all children and Haus Pikinini are monitoring this and restricting its usage to educational purposes on weekdays.
Leadership challenge
A leader with a burden, vision and love for these orphaned children is needed for succession from the current amazing manager and leader who has developed the orphanage into the secure, loving home that it is.
