Millions affected…
The powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude in March, with the epicentre near Mandalay, caused widespread devastation in Myanmar with over 5000 people reported dead, more than 5 000 injured, and thousands displaced as well as critical damage to infrastructure including hospitals, schools, roads and bridges, especially in the densely populated regions of Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, and Bago the Shan. Livelihoods and food supplies are severely disrupted…thought to be over half the population affected. *
Emergency Needs…
Based on communication with locals and reports from the ground, ACN assess the emergency needs of survivors are as follows*:
- Food and Nutrition to prevent starvation and malnutrition
- Non-Food Essentials…blankets, clothing, and sleeping mats to provide warmth and comfort.
- Clean Water and Sanitation facilities…
- Restoration of sanitation facilities.
- Hygiene kits and water purification tablets.
- Repairing water systems.
- Shelter…temporary shelters for displaced families,
- Medical Care…
- Immediate trauma care for the injured, including surgical supplies and trauma kits.
- Mental health support for survivors coping with trauma.
- Infrastructure Repair…rebuilding hospitals, schools, roads, and other key facilities
Challenges to Relief Efforts…
While relief efforts from some organizations and governments are underway, ACN report they are meeting many challenges related to ongoing conflict and instability, insufficient funds, damaged infrastructure, fragmented coordination and health and sanitation risks.
