New Direction…
The overall aim in the first year is to formalise the MOU with in-country delivery partners, secure government and local authority approvals and support current LFPCs with the skills, expertise and resources necessary to implement resilient small scale food production systems that are effective, ecologically appropriate and use food plants that are adapted and culturally relevant to the locality.
The key highlight of this project so far is the strong, locally led, and transparent mobilisation of support for 20 vulnerable households, achieved before planting begins. In practical terms, this means:
- The community identified and prioritised its most vulnerable households (widows, elders, child-headed families, people with disabilities) through local leadership structures.
- Seed was accountably and cost-effectively procured, with multiple quotations, a discernment process, and community oversight.
- Land preparation is underway, showing genuine commitment and readiness of beneficiaries rather than dependency.
- The project is positioned to deliver nutrition-rich local legumes (sugar beans and round nuts) at the right time in the farming season.
- A community seed bank is already planned, signaling early thinking about sustainability and resilience beyond this season.
Project 1 Summary…Ngerenje Village, Gutu District (Masvingo Province), Zimbabwe
Sugar bean and round nut seed have been procured and sorted into 20 × 5kg bags and 20 × 3kg bags of round nuts, the community consultations and beneficiary selection has occurred, land preparation is underway by beneficiary households, and they are now awaiting final clearance from local leadership and Agritex for seed distribution.
Each household will plant the seeds in their own plots, supporting household food security and strengthening local food production within the community.
