It’s All Happening
Library Aid International continues providing books to needy schools in developing countries to improve educational outcomes and life opportunities. More than 160 schools have been benefited over the last six years and a recent sale of books that were surplus to requirements held in August raised $500 in sales and donations.
Most of the container of boxes of books has been distributed to needy schools in the Western Cape Province around Cape Town, South Africa by the Rotary Club of Newlands during April to September, with the final boxes to be delivered in October. After this they will provide LAI with a final report. Below a couple of pictures of some of the schools benefited by the distribution. We have secured the services of two Work-for-the-Dole placements, bringing our complement of regular volunteers for book-sorting to six.
A Work in Progress
We are purchasing a sixth container and sorting and packing boxes of books. Over the 12 months from 1st July 2016 to the 30th June 2017 our volunteers gave us 1142 hours of dedicated time to sort through 1162 assorted boxes of books that were received. The suitable books where then repacked into 669 cartons for shipment.
But the work doesn’t stop! We continue sorting and packing books as well as fundraising for our sixth container even though there is a shortage of volunteers to pack and containers to purchase and send the books in. We have at least half a container of sorted and unsorted books in hand to be categorized. If you have time, energy and a disposition to help please contact us.
Following a request, it is now planned to send a container to Fiji to arrive by June 2018 for distribution by the Rotary Club of Nadi. As you know Fiji was devastated by a category five tropical cyclone in early 2016 and is still recovering.
