Why so many orphans?
The country’s high population of orphans are a result of both parental death and child abandonment, both due to the extreme poverty and poor living conditions in a country with the highest population density in the world and where over 85% of the population live on under $2 /day.
Many orphans are the result of maternal mortality, with death rates of 240 mothers out of every 100,000 births stemming from poor medical care, dilapidated infrastructure and poorly equipped hospitals.
While New Hope orphanage is currently home to 12 boys from Vadun, Banagladesh, it is estimated that approximately 4.9 million children between the ages of 5-14 work, often in appalling conditions, and just over 50% of the population are under 15.
Figures like this can make the problem seem insurmountable but every statistic is an individual life and for these 15 boys, your help makes all the difference. As the saying goes “you may not be able to change the world but you can change the world for one person” …or in this case 15!
The children are selected based on greatest need, irrespective of gender, race or religion. The orphanage cares holistically for the educational, emotional and basic material needs of the children and the boys attend the local primary school which helps give them a place in their local community.
The orphanage has been running since 2008 thanks to the faithful support of donors, part of which included the donation of a small parcel of land to grow rice to help supply food for the orphans.
It is the success of this project, which has now sparked the start of an ambitious new enterprise to purchase additional rice paddies which will enable the orphanage to grow not only enough rice to feed the orphans but over the course of the next 3 years become fully self-supporting. This will mean that any continued donated funds can go towards extending their care to even more children in need…to change the whole world for a few more precious children.
